CLARIFICATION ON SPEED WORLD AND OLYMPIC RECORDS

With Sport Climbing’s Olympic debut less than 24 hours away, the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) would like to clarify that the first men’s and women’s Speed Olympic records will officially be set at the end of the corresponding Combined Speed qualification round.

The current men’s Speed world record is 5.20 seconds, set by Veddriq Leonardo of Indonesia at the IFSC World Cup in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, in May 2021. The women’s Speed world record is 6.96 seconds, set by Iuliia Kaplina of Russia at the IFSC European Championships in Moscow, Russia, in November 2020.

As per IFSC rule 9.15.B.2, all official Speed result times are rounded down to the nearest hundredth (e.g. 6.96), with a thousandth of a second (e.g. 6.967) used solely as a tie-breaker.
